Since 1976, the Sigma Xi Chapter of the University of Massachusetts Lowell has presented an annual award to undergraduate students in recognition of their demonstration of outstanding research capabilities and potential in science and engineering. View the past winners, 1985 to present.

Undergraduate student presenters at the annual Student Research Symposium are eligible to enter the competition.

2012 Competition for the C. Daniel Cole Undergraduate Research Award

Undergraduate students interested in competing for the 2012 C. Daniel Cole Research Awards must do the following:

  1. Submit via email a research report to Dean Robert Gamache (Robert_Gamache@uml.edu), Olney Science Center Room 201, 978-934-3904. Enter C. Daniel Cole Award in the Subject line of your email. The report should be written in the generally accepted format of papers written for publication in scientific journals including an abstract and a list of references. Microsoft Word or PDF documents will be accepted. You should use the material from your poster in this report. On the cover page please include the title of your paper, your name, department, and the name of your faculty advisor(s). The deadline for submission is 5:00 PM on Friday, April 6, 2012.

  2. Present a poster at the Annual Student Research & Community Engagement Symposium on April 24, 2012.

  3. By April 16th, up to five candidates will be invited to make oral presentations to a small faculty committee at 2:00 PM, following the activities of the Student Research & Community Engagement Symposium. Location will be determined later.
After oral presentations, the following prizes will be awarded at the Annual Sigma Xi banquet:

        $500, First Prize,
        $300, Second Prize,
        $200, Third Prize,
        $100, Honorable Mention

In addition, winners will be invited to attend the Annual Sigma Xi Banquet on Tuesday evening, May 1st as guests of the Society. Where appropriate, winners will be inducted into the Society of the Sigma Xi at the banquet with the first year's dues paid for by the Society.
