WHAT:  UMass Lowell students, faculty and staff, along with legislators, public officials, and business and community leaders will open the university’s new Health and Social Sciences Building.

The $40 million, 69,000-square-foot facility – the first new academic building to open on UMass Lowell’s South Campus in more than 30 years – will be home to three of the university’s most popular majors: criminal justice and criminology, nursing and psychology.

A state-of-the-art demonstration hospital wing and other simulation laboratories in the building will enhance students’ educational experience and help them apply what they are learning. Classrooms of various sizes, meeting spaces for team projects and community engagement are also part of the building.

Approximately 200 people are expected to attend the event, which will include a brief speaking program followed by tours of the new building, including one especially for the media.

The project was funded through the Commonwealth’s Higher Education Bond Bill of 2008. The state’s Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance managed the project. A gateway to the university’s South Campus, the Health and Social Sciences Building is part of a UMass Lowell building boom that includes the new Mark and Elisia Saab Emerging Technologies and Innovation Center on North Campus, the University Suites residence hall on East Campus, University Crossing and two new parking garages.

Speakers are scheduled to include UMass Lowell Executive Vice Chancellor Jacqueline Moloney, state lawmakers and Carole Cornelison, commissioner of the Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance.

WHERE:  Health and Social Sciences Building, South Campus, corner of Broadway and Wilder streets. For directions and parking information, contact UMass Lowell media relations.
