Experts Weigh in on Egypt’s Turmoil, Potential

When:      Tuesday, Feb. 22, 5 to 7:30 p.m.
 
What:       While Egypt’s future remains uncertain, members of the UMass Lowell community most familiar with the topic will offer insight and perspective. The discussion will feature Provost Ahmed Abdelal, who is originally from Egypt and has offered analysis of recent events on TV and radio; Political Science Prof. Deina Abdelkader, also originally from Egypt, who has done extensive research on Egyptian politics; Gregory Aftandilian, former Middle East analyst for the U.S. State Department and an associate in the UMass Lowell Center for Middle East Peace, Development and Culture; and Art Prof. Stephen Mishol, who is curating a new exhibit on Egypt at UMass Lowell. Prof. Paula Rayman, director of the Middle East center, will moderate.

Music on the Merrimack Series Presents Jazz Quintet

When:     Thursday, Feb. 24, 7:30 p.m.
 
What:      Fred Buda, formerly of the Boston Pops and Boston Ballet Orchestra, will perform with a two-bass quintet. The concert, part of the Music on the Merrimack series sponsored by UMass Lowell’s Division of Fine Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, will highlight music from the national jazz scene. Buda, a faculty member in the Music Department, was a percussionist with the Boston Pops for more than 35 years and a timpanist for the Boston Ballet Orchestra.

Co-Op Connection Brings Students, Employers Together

When:    Tuesday, March 1, 4 to 6:30 p.m.
 
What:     UMass Lowell plastics engineering students will learn about potential summer and semester internship opportunities at the Co-Op Connection, which will introduce undergraduates to employers in the field. The networking event is organized by the Plastics Engineering Department and the UMass Lowell Office of Career Services and Cooperative Education. Co-ops allow students to gain professional experience prior to graduation. About 50 students are expected to participate in the event, which will also recognize a business and student who have made an outstanding contribution to UMass Lowell’s co-op program.

Contemporary Egyptian Art Showcased in New Exhibit

When:    Reception on Tuesday, March 1, 3 to 6 p.m.; exhibit runs from Feb. 28 through March 24
 
What:     Artwork, including multimedia displays, by artists from Cairo, Egypt will be featured in a new exhibit, “From the Nile to the Merrimack: A Selection of Contemporary Art from Egypt.” The show grew out of partnerships forged during a UMass Lowell delegation’s trip to Egypt in the spring of 2010. The exhibit is curated by UMass Lowell professors Stephen Mishol and Jim Jeffers, as well as Rasha Ragab, curator at the Museum of Modern Art in Cairo. The show will be presented in the University Gallery, which is open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

‘Mothers of Rock’ Concert Celebrates Women in Music

When:     Wednesday, March 2, 7 to 10 p.m.
 
What:      As a tribute to women in the music, UMass Lowell’s Music & Entertainment Industry Student Association (MEISA) will host “Mothers of Rock.” The annual show was established by three UMass Lowell music majors in 2004 and each year, brings together live performances and original artwork by students. Admission to the event is free, but donations will be accepted to benefit Girls, Inc. of Lowell.

U.S. Rep. Barney Frank Offers Insight on Congress

When:     Friday, March 4, 10:30 to 11:50 a.m.
 
What:      U.S. Rep. Barney Frank will speak to UMass Lowell students in the political science course, “The Congress,” about his experiences. Chancellor Marty Meehan, who teaches the course with Prof. Patricia Talty, served in the U.S. House of Representatives for 14 years, and will also share his experiences with students. The course is an advanced study of representation, campaigns and elections, as well as the functions of Congress within the American political system. (Note: This event is open to the media but not to the general public.)
