UMass Lowell Honors Excellence Among Student Athletes
When: Tuesday, May 10, 6:15 p.m.
What: UMass Lowell’s Department of Athletics will host its 2011 Excellence Awards Night to honor outstanding student athletes. Former UMass Lowell soccer standout Danielle Niles, who is a meteorologist at New England Cable News (NECN), will serve as the emcee. Among the honors to be given are awards for male and female athletes of the year as well as the Bob Griffin Academic Award for the women’s and men’s athletic teams with the highest cumulative grade point averages.

Wind Ensemble to Perform World Premiere of Composition
When: Tuesday, May 10, 7:30 p.m.
What: The New England Youth Wind Ensemble will perform the world premiere of a brand-new work by renowned composer Robert Sheldon. The work, called “Mills on the Merrimack,” was commissioned by Debra-Nicole Huber, UMass Lowell’s associate director of bands and director of instrumental music outreach. The “Mills on the Merrimack” celebrates Lowell’s heritage as bustling mill city and the rich tradition of the Irish immigrants who settled in the city to work in the mills. For their support for music and the arts, Huber is dedicating the premiere to UMass Lowell Chancellor Marty Meehan and Executive Vice Chancellor Jacqueline Moloney.

Opening Set for Art and Design Senior Exhibit
When: Thursday, May 12, 5 to 7 p.m.
What: Works created by art and design seniors in the bachelor of fine arts program at UMass Lowell will be showcased at this biannual exhibit of student artwork. The art, which features a variety of media, will be on display through Thursday, May 26.

Reception to Preview New Incubator Space for Medical Device Startups
When: Wednesday, May 18, 5 to 8 p.m.
What: The Massachusetts Medical Device Development Center (M2D2), a UMass Lowell-UMass Medical School initiative that is helping entrepreneurs move new medical device ideas from patent to production, is hosting a preview of its new incubator and office space in the Wannalancit Mills Building. The new space will include six wet lab suites, open collaboration space, offices and other facilities. Representatives of M2D2 and several medical device startups will be on hand.

Lowell Celebrates Small Business Week
When: Thursday, May 19, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
What: The city of Lowell will celebrate Small Business Week with its Fourth Annual One-Stop Small Business Resource Fair and CEO Luncheon. The event will feature representatives of government agencies, banks and other organizations that can help small businesses grow. The CEO Luncheon will feature speaker Sal Lupoli of Sal’s Pizza.
