Speakers, Students to Engage in Discussion of Global Warming’s Impact on Society

WHAT:  UMass Lowell’s second annual Climate Change Teach-In features internationally renowned advocates of climate-change research and education. U.S. Rep. Niki Tsongas will kick off the event.

• Jeff Goodell, contributing editor to Rolling Stone magazine and author of “How to Cool the Planet: Geoengineering and the Audacious Quest to Fix Earth’s Climate;”
• Associate Prof. Juliette Rooney-Varga of UMass Lowell, expert on the ecological consequences of climate change and the Climate Change Teach-In organizer;
• Prof. Paul Kirshen of Tufts University, lead author for the United Nations Intergovernment Panel on Climate Change and an expert on flood-risk assessment in New England and beyond;
• Prof. William Moomaw of Tufts University, an authority on international climate-change policy;
• Prof. Kerry Emanuel of MIT, a prominent climate scientist studying extreme events.

More than 250 people are expected to participate in small-group, interactive discussions that will engage students, faculty and the public about the environmental effects of global warming and the economic and health costs of action and inaction.

The teach-in is hosted by the Climate Change Initiative (CCI), a new movement at UMass Lowell that is addressing climate change through education and research.
