WHAT:   A ceremonial flag-raising in honor of Veterans Day will be preceded by remarks from U.S. Sen. Scott Brown, UMass Lowell Chancellor Marty Meehan, Student Veteran’s Organization President David Boyd and other dignitaries.

There are 1,270 veterans attending UMass Lowell. The university assists veterans in coordinating education benefits available to them through the federal government and state, and works closely with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Vocational Rehabilitation Program, which offers tuition assistance programs for active-duty members of the military and National Guard. Among the federal programs is the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill benefit, which covers all or a portion of tuition, fees, housing and books for veterans who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Approximately 35,000 veterans of both military engagements have returned to Massachusetts after their service.
