Broadway Producer Alum to Screen New Documentary

When:  Thursday, Oct. 15, 6:30 p.m.

What:   Executive producer Bonnie Comley ’81 and her husband Stewart Lane will screen their documentary “Show Business: The Road to Broadway,” discuss the making of the movie and answer questions from the audience. The film examines the inner workings of four high-profile Broadway musicals ߝ “Wicked,” “Taboo,” “Caroline or Change” and “Avenue Q” ߝ on their journeys to the Tony Awards. Backstage access reveals a rare view of the creative process from casting to curtain call. The program ߝ which is free and open to the public ߝ is part of the Power of Possibility Alumni Showcase, which brings successful graduates back to campus to discuss their careers and offer advice to students. Upcoming speakers are scheduled to include Scott Waugh ’90, physical therapist for the Boston Bruins and director of rehabilitation for the Boston Red Sox, and Saro Picciotto ’81, chairman and CEO of Wainwright Investment Counsel LLC.

14 UMass Lowell Representatives to Present at American Studies Program

When:   Friday, Oct. 16 and Saturday, Oct. 17

What:   The New England American Studies Association has chosen Lowell for a two-day conference on urban environments in the global and post-industrial economy. Fourteen UMass Lowell faculty and staff members will present at the program, which aims to bring together academics from a range of disciplines, including history, literature, economics, political science, environmental studies and film and cultural studies, as well as community organizers, artists and policy makers. UMass Lowell will also be represented at a Massachusetts Poetry Festival reading from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 16 at Cobblestones Restaurant.

University, Partners Hold U.S./Ireland Emerging Technologies Conference

When:  Monday, Oct. 19 and Tuesday, Oct. 20, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

What:  UMass Lowell, along with partners Queen’s University of Belfast and Dublin City University, presents the first U.S./Ireland Emerging Technologies Conference. Featuring experts in areas from medical devices and nanotechnology to biopharmaceuticals and medical diagnostics, the conference is expected to attract researchers and businesspeople from across the region to discuss cutting-edge new research and real-world applications. Fall Festival Includes Family Day, Hockey Opener, Alumni Reception

When:  Thursday, Oct. 22 through Saturday, Oct. 24

What:   UMass Lowell welcomes alumni, faculty, staff and friends to the annual Fall Festival/Homecoming weekend with Family Day, the first home hockey game of the season against Colgate University, followed the next night by a rematch of last year’s Hockey East semifinal against Northeastern, won in overtime by the River Hawks. Events include:

  1. Thursday, Oct. 22, 8 p.m., Comedy Show featuring Bo Burnham (details at www.umltickets.com);
  2. Friday, Oct. 23, 4 to 6 p.m., Hockey First Night with barbeque, live music and games;
  3. Saturday, Oct. 24, 10 a.m., Jennifer’s 5K Run/Walk to benefit the Jennifer D’Amour Scholarship Fund;
  4. Saturday, Oct. 24, 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Family Day with Chancellor Meehan addressing families at noon;
  5. Saturday Oct. 24, 2:30 p.m., Riley Reunion Night is a pre-game reception and ceremony celebrating the 2009 induction class into the UMass Lowell Hockey Hall of Honor:
  6. Saturday, Oct. 24, 4 p.m., Pre-hockey game alumni reception at the Tsongas Arena. Admission is $10 and includes game ticket, hot dog and drink. River Hawks vs. Northeastern Huskies at 5 p.m.

Expert Presents View of Financial Meltdown, Outlook for Future
 
When:  Monday, Oct. 26, noon

What:   “Preventing Future Financial Meltdowns: What’s Needed? What’s Likely?” will be presented by UMass Lowell’s Regional Economic and Social Development Department and the Center for Industrial Competitiveness fall seminar series. Gerald Epstein, a professor of economics and co-director of the Political Economy Research Institute at UMass Amherst, offers an expert’s analysis.
