Prof. Joins Boston Ballet Orchestra, Boston Pops
When: The Boston Ballet’s “The Nutcracker,” now through Sunday, Dec. 27; Boston Pops, Thursday, Dec. 31, pre-concert at 8 p.m.
What: UMass Lowell Music Prof. David Martins has been selected to play clarinet in 36 performances of the Boston Ballet production of Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker.” On New Year’s Eve, Martins will join noted soloist Amanda Palmer with Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops.
Where: “The Nutrcacker,” The Boston Opera House, 539 Washington St., Boston; the Boston Pops, Symphony Hall, 301 Massachusetts Ave., Boston.

Holiday Party for Families Living in Local Shelters
When: Sunday, Dec. 20, noon to 3 p.m.
What: Families from shelters in Lowell are invited to a Lowell Holiday Festival celebration hosted by the university. Children will be treated to lunch, activities, entertainment and a visit from Santa bearing gifts for all.
Where: Campus Recreation Center, 100 Pawtucket St., Lowell

Students Take Part in Simulated Waste Cleanup
When: Monday, Jan. 11 to Friday, Jan. 15, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
What: With simulated work tasks and mock incidents, the Hazardous Waste Site Health and Safety course that’s typically provided to government workers and businesses, is offered to students. They will gain a better understanding of work-site hazards and how to properly respond in emergency situations. The five-day course offered by the New England Consortium at UMass Lowell consists of tabletop exercises and live interactive drills complete with HazMat suits.
