Students’ Interactive Art Featured in Revolving Museum Exhibit
 
When:
            Opening event is Tuesday, Dec. 2, 7 to 9 p.m.
 
What:             Interactive art by UMass Lowell students will be featured at the opening of a new exhibit at the Revolving Museum. The pieces were created in Tangible Interaction Design, a new multidisciplinary class taught by UMass Lowell faculty Fred Martin of Computer Science and Karen Roehr of Art, that combines computing, sensing, interaction and graphic design.

Lowell Boxer’s Life and Times Is Topic of Panel Discussion

When:             Tuesday, Dec. 2, 7 to 9 p.m.

What:            “Irish Thunder: The Hard Life and Times of Micky Ward” will feature the legendary Lowell boxer along with author Bob Halloran and boxing promoter Al Valenti.

Chancellor Meehan to Speak to Lowell High School Senior Class

When:              Wednesday, Dec. 3, 9:15 to 10 a.m.

What:               UMass Lowell Chancellor Marty Meehan was recently honored as one of Lowell High School’s Distinguished Alumni. As part of this honor, each recipient was invited to return to Lowell High School and speak to students. Meehan will address the approximately 700 members of the senior class, including discussing his experiences attending Lowell High and UMass Lowell, and how the education he received at both institutions provided him with the foundation he needed to succeed in his future endeavors. Following his address, Meehan will take questions from students.

Free Concerts Presented by Student Musicians, Vocalists

When:            Wednesday, Dec. 3, Thursday, Dec. 4, Monday, Dec. 8, Tuesday, Dec. 9 and Wednesday, Dec. 10; all performances are at 7:30 p.m.

What:             UMass Lowell students participating in instrumental and vocal groups will perform free concerts open to the public: University Choirs, directed by Murray Kidd, will perform on Wednesday, Dec. 3; String Ensemble, directed by Kay George Roberts, on Thursday, Dec. 4; Percussion Ensemble, directed by Jeff Fischer, on Monday, Dec. 8; Concert Band, directed by Daniel Lutz, on Tuesday, Dec. 9; and the Senior Performance Recital on Wednesday, Dec. 10.

Latest Research in Materials Science Highlighted at Symposium

When:             Friday, Dec. 5, 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

What:             The University of Massachusetts Lowell will hold an anniversary symposium to honor the memory of the late Prof. Sukant Tripathy, renowned researcher and former director of the Center for Advanced Materials, who also served as UMass Lowell’s provost and vice chancellor. This annual event brings together researchers and colleagues from academia and industry, as well as past and present students and associates of the center to discuss latest research activities in materials science.

New York Ballet Presents Special Version of ‘The Nutcracker’
 
When: 
           Sunday, Dec. 7, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
 
What:             UMass Lowell’s Discovery Series and the New York Ballet welcome the start of the holiday season with a special, one-hour version of the traditional favorite, “The Nutcracker.” Tickets are $12, and can be purchased through the UMass Lowell box office at 978-934-4444.

Find Art in Engineering at University Gallery 
 
When:  
          Exhibit runs through Thursday, Dec. 11. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
 
What:             Engineering projects from aqueducts to electrical substations and oil refineries inspire Jamey Morrill’s “Grid.”  It is a modular installation made of PVC pipe and wood that uses floor-based interconnected forms for a pared-down tribute to the natural evolution of complex infrastructure from simple forms.

School of Health and Environment Celebrates Five Years, Honors Founding Dean

When:            Friday, Dec. 12, 2 to 4 p.m.
 
What:             UMass Lowell’s School of Health and Environment will hold a celebration of its fifth anniversary and honor Dr. David Wegman, the school’s founding dean.
