Commencement Celebration Kicks Off Friday Night

When:           Scholarship Fundraising Dinner ߝ Friday, May 30, 5:30 to 8 p.m.
                    Commencement ߝ Saturday, May 31, 10 a.m.

What:            Nearly 2,000 students will graduate this weekend from UMass Lowell. The celebration of their achievement kicks off Friday, May 30 with a pre-commencement dinner that will recognize this year’s six honorary degree recipients:  Mary Jo Leahey, ’37, founding benefactor and inspiration for the Mary Jo Leahey High School Summer Band Camp; Gerald Martone, ’79, director of Humanitarian Affairs at the International Rescue Committee; and Edward O. Wilson, professor emeritus at Harvard University and Pulitzer Prize winning author. Thomas O’Connor, ’77 and ’80, who will receive the Distinguished Alumni Award this year, as well as students who are getting top academic honors. The Allen House event will also raise money for student scholarships. On Saturday, May 31, U.S. Sen. John Kerry will deliver the commencement address to graduates receiving bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. For more, check out www.uml.edu/commencement. Spring 2008 BFA Candidates’ Works on Exhibit

When:            Runs through Saturday, May 31

What:            UMass Lowell’s Art Department and the Fine Arts Division of the College of Arts and Sciences presents this exhibition of senior projects from the Art and Design studios, featuring a variety of media including advertising campaigns, animation, painting, photography, product design, sculpture and more.

Summit Addresses Housing Crisis in the Merrimack Valley

           Monday, June 2, 8 a.m. to noon

What:          Congresswoman Niki Tsongas brings together experts on housing foreclosures and related issues for a regional summit, “The State of Housing in the Merrimack Valley.” Prof. Barry Bluestone, dean of the School of Social Sciences at Northeastern University and director of the Center for Urban and Regional Policy, will keynote, and UMass Lowell faculty experts are among those who will speak. The summit is co-sponsored by UMass Lowell, Northern Middlesex Council of Governments, Merrimack Valley Planning Commission, Merrimack Valley Economic Development Council and the Merrimack Valley Regional Housing Consortium.

Opening the Door to College for High School Athletes

When:      
      Thursday, June 5, 7 p.m.

What:             UMass Lowell Athletics’ mission is “Reaching Beyond the Games,” and as part of that, the department is inviting members of the high school athletics community ߝ players, coaches, administrators and parents ߝ to a free seminar designed to help student athletes with their journey toward intercollegiate athletic participation. Guest speakers will include Director of Athletics Dana Skinner and Senior Associate Athletic Director Joan Lehoullier, Director of Admissions Kerri Mead and UMass Lowell experts on NCAA eligibility and health care for athletes. Head coaches from the University’s ice hockey, field hockey and soccer teams are also scheduled to speak. Medical Device Entrepreneurs: Get Help Here!

When:           Friday, June 6, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

What:           M2D2 ߝ a UMass Lowell and UMass Worcester initiative that assists medical device entrepreneurs and start-ups ߝ will hold a workshop on how to access federal SBIR and STTR small business grants. The session is co-sponsored by the IGNITE program at MassMEDIC, the medical device industry’s trade association, and costs $30 for the workshop and a luncheon.
