LOWELL ߝ UMass Lowell’s Mary Jo Leahey Symphonic Band Camp will host its Grand Finale Concert on Saturday, July 19. The week-long camp gives more than 100 talented students the opportunity to improve their individual skills and broaden their own musical experience. After their intensive week-long practice schedule, the young musicians will perform their final concert at 11:30 a.m. in the Durgin Concert Hall on UML South, located at 35 Wilder Street, Lowell, Mass. The concert is both free and open to the public. Preceding the concert at 10 a.m. will be a reception for Mary Jo Leahey at the Allen House, also on UML South.
Chancellor Marty Meehan will also take part in the Grand Finale Concert by narrating during a musical piece titled, “J.F.K. in Memoriam.” The piece, composed by James Curnow, takes several of Kennedy’s most touching quotes and weaves them into a work for the concert band. The Chancellor will recite these quotes while Executive Director of the Symphonic Band Camp, Debra-Nicole Huber, conducts the piece.
Huber, who is also UMass Lowell’s associate director of university bands and a Lowell resident, recently received the 2008 Music Advocate Award at the Massachusetts All-State Convention. She was nominated for this award by students.
