Kerouac Conference Turns 10
When: Thursday, Oct. 6, 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Friday, Oct. 7, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Where: O’Leary Library, Room 222
UML South, 66 Wilder St., Lowell
What: The Jack Kerouac Conference on Beat Literature expands to two full days this year, the 10th anniversary of the conference at UMass Lowell. The schedule includes reflections on Kerouac and his works, scholarly comment, a video screening and readings.
Keynote speaker Sam Kashner, author of numerous books, recently was featured on a National Public Radio segment on nonfiction writing. He will speak about his memoir, When I Was Cool: My Life at the Jack Kerouac School, at 2 p.m. on Friday. On Thursday at 7 p.m., two Kerouac-inspired authors will read from their work: UML’s own David Daniel and Christelle Davis of University of Technology Sydney. Coming Out, Coming Together Photojournalism on Exhibit at O’Leary
When: Tuesday, Oct. 11 through Monday, Oct. 17
Where: O’Leary Library, UML South, 66 Wilder St., Lowell
What: The O’Leary Library will showcase Windows On Our Community, an exhibit displaying the work of Craig Bailey and Marilyn Humphries, whose photojournalism has been featured in a variety of Boston-area publications. The exhibit contains photos from such events as the Matthew Shepard Candlelight Vigil at the State House, the North American Gay Volleyball Association Tournament, a Domestic Partnership Rally, and Boston’s Gay Pride celebrations.
The exhibit is free and open to the public.

Amtrack Champion and Former Gov. Michael Dukakis to Speak about a Regional Rail Plan for New England
When: Wednesday, Oct. 12, at noon
Where: Seminar Room 500M, O’Leary Library
UML South, 66 Wilder St., Lowell
What: Michael Dukakis, a distinguished professor of political science at Northeastern University and visiting professor at the School of Public Policy at UCLA, will speak on the importance of a rail plan for New England. Dukakis, Democratic presidential candidate in 1988 and twice governor of Massachusetts, is well known for his research on national health care policy reform and his advocacy of public transportation. President Clinton named him to the Board of Directors of Amtrak in 1998 and he is currently vice chairman of the Amtrak Reform Board. A buffet lunch is available.
