Conference Examines Immigrant Worker Safety and Health

 

When: Tuesday, Sept. 28, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., and

            Wednesday, Sept. 29, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

Where: Wannalancit Mills Conference Room, 600 Suffolk St., Lowell.

 

What:

UMass Lowell and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) this week will co-sponsor a two-day symposium, "Improving Immigrant Worker Safety and Health."

The conference will bring together more than 150 people from community-based organizations, labor unions, and public health and occupational health institutions to share information and research findings.  Presentations will include such topics as the special issues and needs of immigrant adolescent workers and occupational injuries and fatalities among immigrant workers

Speakers and session leaders include representatives from NIOSH, the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Centers for Disease Control.  Representatives of labor unions, immigrant advocacy groups and industry also will lead sessions.

UMass Lowell to Unveil Diversity Benches on Wednesday

 

When:  Wednesday, Sept. 29 at 11 a.m.

 

Where:  UMass Lowell South Quad, corner of Broadway and Wilder streets

 

What: 

UMass Lowell this week will unveil 13 new benches engraved with inspirational quotations that are designed to celebrate cultural diversity in the community.

            Under the banner "Take a Stand, Have a Seat," University and community representatives will gather for the unveiling on Wednesday, Sept. 29 at 11 a.m. at the UMass Lowell South quad.  Mayor Armand Mercier is expected to welcome guests to the event, which will include a speaking program, food and music.

            The celebration is sponsored by the University's Council on Diversity and Pluralism.

Music, Food and Fun Featured at Saturday's Family Day

 

When:  Saturday, Oct. 2, 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

 

Where:  UMass Lowell South Quad, corner of Broadway and Wilder streets

 

What:

            Music, food and fun will be the featured attractions this Saturday when UMass Lowell hosts its annual Family Day.  The event, which runs from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., will feature musical performances, pony rides, family photos, inflatable rides, crafts and games.  The event - which is open to the public - will kick off with a welcome by Chancellor William Hogan and feature the music of "Recycled Percussion."

Over 30 clubs are participating in the celebration by offering a variety of food and activities for all ages.  Families of students, faculty, staff, alumni and the Greater Lowell community are expected to attend.

            Family Day is sponsored by the Campus Activities Programming Association (CAPA), the Residence Hall Association, the Office of Student Activities and Leadership Development, and several campus offices.

Campus to Sponsor "A Taste of Lowell"

 

When:  Thursday, Oct. 7 from 4 to 7 p.m.

 

Where:  Campus Recreation Center, corner of Aiken and Pawtucket streets

 

What:

The campus community will have an opportunity to sample the fare offered by downtown businesses at next week's "A Taste of Lowell:  Bring the Downtown In." 

The first annual expo will showcase more than 50 restaurants, shops and small businesses in downtown and Greater Lowell at the Campus Recreation Center on Thursday, Oct. 7 from 4 to 7 p.m.  In addition to samples provided by local restaurants, many participating businesses will offer discount coupons and job opportunities.

The event - which is free and open to the public - is sponsored by the Student Government Association and its campus partners.
