"Dummies Make Us Smarter," Says Engineer to Girls at WISE Career Day

When: Friday, May 2, Workshops begin at 9:10, 10:10, and 11:10 a.m. (Keynote speaker at 12:40 p.m., in Olney 150)

Where: Chem (Olney) and Bio (Olsen) buildings, UMass Lowell North, Riverside Street

What:

About 400 girls from seventh and eighth grades will participate in WISE 2003 on Friday, May 2 on UMass Lowell North. Each girl will attend three workshops from a selection of 26, presented by working professional women in the sciences, engineering, and technical fields.

Alison Japiskse, a vehicle crash safety engineer with the Ford Motor Company, works every day with dummies-crash dummies, that is-to make vehicles safer. Japikse will be the keynote speaker at the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) program at UMass Lowell, sponsored by a major grant from Philips Medical Systems in Andover.

Philips Medical Systems and WISE will be presenting scholarships for summer science and engineering camps to 25 girls.

Students come from schools in Andover, Ayer, Bedford, Billerica, Chelmsford, Dracut, Groton, Lawrence, Lowell, Maynard, Methuen, North Andover, Pepperell, Reading, Shirley, Tewksbury, Townsend, Tyngsboro, Westford and Wilmington; and from Bow, New Hampshire.

Combined Choral Ensembles Conduct Two Spring Concerts

When: Sunday, May 4 at 3 p.m. and Friday, May 9 at 7:30 p.m.

Where: Durgin Hall, UMass Lowell South, Wilder Street, Lowell

What:

            The combined UMass Lowell choral ensembles will present two spring concerts on Sunday, May 4 at 3 p.m. and Froday, May 9 at 7:30 p.m. Both concerts are free to the public.

Psychology Donates Welcome Packs to the Department of Social Services

 

When: Monday, May 1, 5-6 p.m.

Where: MIL Conference Room, 1st Floor, Wannalancit Mills, UMass Lowell, Suffolk Street, Lowell

What:

            The Psychology Club will present Welcome Packs to representatives of the Department of Social Services at the Psychology Spring Banquet, May 5 at 5 p.m. in the Wannalancit  Mills conference area.

The packs provide well-needed supplies, such as toys, underwear and hygiene products, for children entering foster care. The donation drive has been ongoing over the past several months and has been supported by numerous corporate sponsors.

Wind Ensemble Features Alumnus Composer

When: Monday, May 5 at 7:30 p.m.

Where: Durgin Concert Hall, UMass Lowell, Wilder Street, Lowell

What:

The UMass Lowell Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Prof. David Martins, will feature music of alumnus composer Pasquale "Pat" Tassone on Monday, May 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the Durgin Concert Hall, UMass Lowell South on Wilder Street.

Mr. Tassone received his Bachelor in Music Education from Lowell State College, Masters from Boston Conservatory and Ph.D. from Brandeis in Music Composition.  The wind ensemble will perform two new works by Mr. Tassone: Fanfare and Dance and The Gemelli Chronicle(IN Memoriam, September 11, 2001 ). The composer will attend and has been involved in the rehearsing of the pieces.

The concert is free and open to the public.
