On Wednesday, April 23, Lowell Mayor Rita Mercier will proclaim Medical Laboratory Week in Lowell in honor of National Medical Laboratory Week, sponsored by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), which runs April 20 through the 26th. The ceremony is at 11 a.m. in the Mayor's Reception room. The mayor will be joined by UMass Lowell's Dean of Health Professions Janice Stecchi and Kathleen Doyle, chair of the Health and Clinical Sciences Department, as well as representatives from the health care industry.
The week recognizes the approximately 265,000 medical laboratory professionals and 15,000 board certified pathologists who perform and interpret medical laboratory tests nationwide, many of whom are UMass Lowell alums.
The ASCP sponsors the week in order to call attention to the increasing shortage of qualified clinical laboratory practitioners. Over the next decade, qualified clinicians will be available to fill fewer than half of the laboratory positions that will be available, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. This shortfall may become more severe as the threat of bioterrorism looms. There are currently 1,200 clinical labs in Massachusetts.

UMass Lowell Hosts Performance by The Potentials Unlimited
When: Wednesday, April 23, 2:30 p.m.
Where: Mahoney Auditorium, UMass Lowell South, Broadway Street, Lowell
What:
The Potentials Unlimited, a unique performance troupe of professional and amateur performers, some of whom are either physically and/or developmentally challenged, will perform at UMass Lowell Wednesday, April 23 at 2:30 in the Mahoney Auditorium. The appearance is sponsored by the Challengers' Student Club, the Counseling Center and the Center for Diversity and Pluralism.
The troupe is led by Keith James and Sandy Streid, professionals who have performed across the country. Following the performance, there will be a discussion of our culture's attitudes about disabled people. Admission is free.

UMass Lowell Brings We Band of Angels Author to Lowell
When: Thursday April 24, 5 - 9 p.m.
Where: Doubletree Hotel, Warren Street, Lowell

The media is invited to hear Dr. Elizabeth Norman, author of the critically acclaimed book We Band of Angels, speak at the Double Tree Hotel in Lowell on April 24 beginning at 5 p.m. The event is being held in conjunction with the UMass Lowell Department of Nursing Preceptor Appreciation/Graduate Research Day. The event is sponsored by the University's Eta Omega Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International.
The book tells the story of the nurses caught by surprise in the Philippines by a Japanese attack which taught them first hand about battle, and, later, what it's like to be a prisoner of war. Here, in letters, diaries, and firsthand accounts, is the story of what really happened during those dark days, woven together in a compelling saga of women in war.

Hofrichter to Discuss the Politics of Health Inequities
When: Monday, April 28, 12:30 p.m.
Where: 500M O'Leary Library, UMass Lowell South, Wilder Street

Dr. Richard Hofrichter, author of Neighborhood Justice in Capitalist Society: The Expansion of the Informal State, will speak about the politics of health inequalities at 500M O'Leary Library, UMass Lowell South on Monday, April 28 at 12:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.
The seminar is co-sponsored by the Department of Regional Economic and Social Development, Department of Work Environment, the PHASE Project and the Center for Public Health Research and Health Promotion.
