Thursday, Feb. 13 - Noon

WHAT: UMass Lowell students will launch a visual and performing arts center that will provide an entertainment venue on campus.  Next week's opening will feature a speaking program and overview of the plans, followed by an evening of live entertainment.

WHERE:  Fox Hall

                    Third Floor, North Campus

WHY: The center - which has been more than a year in the planning - is expected to feature bands and other musical acts, as well as comedians and theatrical performers.  The 1247-square-foot newly renovated space also will provide an opportunity for exhibits by visual artists.  Steve Fiola, a senior music business major who conceived the plan as a part of a class project, said the idea is to provide weekend entertainment for students, while also enabling new acts to be born.

The center will be run by students, with guidance from Music Prof. Richard Strasser and the Office of Student Life, and will fall under the Student Government Association.  Students will serve as managers of marketing, promotions and bookings; artistic and technical directions; and general crew.
