LOWELL -- Construction is set to begin on UMass Lowell's $70 million Emerging Technologies and Innovations Center.

Yesterday marked the last day of demolition for the university's 63-year-old Smith Hall, near the corner of University Avenue and the VFW Highway, which will clear the path for the tech center, UMass Lowell officials said.

The new 84,000-square-foot building, which will be the first academic building to be built on campus in 35 years, is expected to be completed by the fall of 2012. It is also expected to foster the creation of hundreds of new private-sector jobs in its first five years of operation, along with 400 construction jobs.
