UMass Lowell Student Email

UMass Lowell upgraded the student email system from Live@edu to Office 365 on 1/12/13.  For more information about the upgrade, go to our Student Email Upgrade document.

On 6/11/13, Microsoft will be upgrading our Office 365 service, bringing us many new features.

  • You should not experience any email interruptions in Outlook or on mobile devices
  • If you happen to be checking your email with the Outlook Web App when your email account is updated, you may need to sign out and then sign back in
  • You won’t need to change anything on your computer, in Outlook, or on any mobile device you use

After the service upgrade, you will notice some immediate changes to Outlook Web App. For more information, go to the Outlook Web App information page.

All official UMass Lowell communications will be sent to you at your UMass Lowell Office 365 Exchange Online student email address. Your login credentials will also allow you to sign in to other campus-wide systems requiring a login.

An email account will be set up for you automatically once the UMass Lowell Registrar's Office has verified your enrollment. Activating your account is as easy as 1-2-3; just follow these steps. 

1. What is my UMass Lowell email address?

All student email accounts have the same format: Firstname_Lastname@student.uml.edu.  Your legal first name and last name as documented in the UMass Lowell iSiS system will be used to create your unique email address. If your full name has previously been used in our system, a number will be added to the end of your name (for example, Firstname_Lastname1@student.uml.edu). If you have not logged into iSiS to retrieve your UMass Lowell student email address, go to Getting Started with iSiS Self-Service & Email.

2. Go to http://mypassword.uml.edu to choose your new password. 

Your initial password follows this format: Ums12345678, where the last eight digits are your student ID. You must change this password; just follow the easy instructions. After you change your password, be sure to visit Create/Edit my Profile for future password changes. 

3. Access your email through Exchange Online.

To access your email account, go to the Exchange Online login page and enter your full student email address including @student.uml.edu (refer to Step 1). Enter your new email password, then choose your language and time zone, and you're ready to go!

I want to change my password.

To change your email password, go to http://mypassword.uml.edu and follow the instructions. After you change your password, you should set up your password reset profile for future password changes. Your new password will automatically sync with the Exchange Online environment at Microsoft.

I forgot my password/reset profile.

If you do not know your email password and have not set up your password reset profile on the My Password page, you must contact the UMass Lowell Help Center at 978-934-4357. Be prepared to provide personal information (i.e., student ID, birthday) to validate your identity.

Your new password will automatically sync with the Exchange Online environment at Microsoft.

How do I access my email account? 

To access your email account, go to the Exchange Online login page and enter your full student email address (including @student.uml.edu) and your email password.

  1. Am I eligible for a UMass Lowell Office 365 Exchange Online student email account? Any active UMass Lowell student is eligible for an Exchange Online email account. This includes undergraduates, graduate students and continuing education students. 

  2. What features are included with my email account? 
Students have access to the following:
  • Email with up to 25 gigabyte (GB) of storage
  • Outlook Calendar and contacts
  • Mobile features

The email, calendar and contacts features are supported by the UMass Lowell Help Center. There is limited support for other features, such as access to SkyDrive, since Office 365 is a free service provided by Microsoft.   3. How large is my email quota (storage space)? 
Exchange Online currently provides each student with 25 GB of storage for email and calendar content. Your email quota cannot be increased.

  4. How do I access my UMass Lowell Office 365 Exchange Online student email account?
You can access your Exchange Online student email account from any web browser by going to the  Exchange Online login page at http://www.outlook.com/student.uml.edu.

5. What is my email password?
  • If you are accessing your email account for the first time, your initial password follows this format: Ums12345678, where the last eight digits are your student ID. You must change this password. Go to http://mypassword.uml.edu and select Change my Password. After you change your password, set up your password reset profile for future password changes.
  • If you forgot your password and have already set up your password reset profile at http://mypassword.uml.edu, you can reset it by selecting Reset my Password.

  6. What are the benefits of the UMass Lowell Exchange Online services?
Exchange Online is a cloud-based email service that offers significant advantages over traditional email services like Gmail and Hotmail. Exchange Online uses Microsoft Exchange as the backend for its email, contact, calendar and task management, all of which can be shared on the UMass Lowell network. This same service is used by many large organizations for internal and external communications and collaboration. In addition to email, the Exchange Online calendar feature is an appointment book that lets other students check your availability. Your Exchange Online contacts are stored in an address book that will allow you to easily find contact information and create contact groups.  To access Exchange Online you can go to http://www.outlook.com/student.uml.edu and log in using your full UMass Lowell student email address and your email password.  

  7. Do I need to use specific hardware or software, such as a Windows PC or Microsoft Internet Explorer?
No. All web-based services included in Exchange Online can be accessed from Windows, Mac or Linux operating systems. This includes Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari and other web browsers on computers that run UNIX, Apple Macintosh or Microsoft Windows operating systems.   8. Will someone at Microsoft be reading my email?

  9. Am I required to use the UMass Lowell Office 365 Exchange Online student email service?
Yes. All official university business will be sent to your UMass Lowell Exchange Online student email address. You may forward your student email to an alternate email account using the Forward option once you log into your Exchange Online account.  

  10. Can I use other email programs like Outlook to read email?
Yes. You can use several different POP3 and IMAP4 email programs to connect to your UMass Lowell Exchange Online student email account. The features supported by each email program do vary. For information about the features offered by specific POP3 and IMAP4 email programs, refer to the documentation included with each program.   11. Can I access my UMass Lowell Office 365 Exchange Online student email account via Outlook Mobile Access or Wireless Application Protocol (WAP)?
No. Exchange Online does not support Outlook Mobile Access or WAP. Exchange Online supports Exchange ActiveSync, POP and IMAP to access and synchronize a mailbox with a mobile phone.   12. Can I access my UMass Lowell Office 365 Exchange Online email from my mobile phone?

  13. Does the UMass Lowell Office 365 Exchange Online service include spam filtering?

  14. Can I forward mail sent to my UMass Lowell Office 365 Exchange Online account to a different email service such as Gmail, Yahoo Mail or Hotmail?
Yes. After you log into your Exchange Online account, you can set up a rule to forward your mail to an alternate account. 

  15. Is data in my UMass Lowell Office 365 Exchange Online account backed up?
No. Email messages, contacts, calendar items, etc. are NOT backed up. We recommend that you manually backup your critical documents.
