Research

Research in the Department of Clinical Laboratory and Nutritional Sciences is incorporated in all curricula. Both undergraduate and graduate students receive hands-on science research experience giving them the technical skills that will be valuable in the job market.

In the Clinical Sciences option, students do research in their Directed Studies and Senior Research courses under the direction of Department faculty. Research may include both library and laboratory investigations.

In the Medical Laboratory Science option formerly (Medical Technology option),  students have research projects during their Clinical Chemistry internship evaluating instrumentation and analytical methods in Clinical Chemistry. They can also do research in the Directed Studies course under the supervision of Department faculty.

Nutritional Science students investigate the biochemical relationships between nutrients and the development of chronic disease. Current nutritional science research projects in which undergraduates participate are investigating the effect of antioxidants on macular degeneration; nutritional and pharmaceutical aspects of cardiovascular disease prevention and treatment; the cultural, ethnic, and gender relationships between nutrition, obesity, and type II diabetes; and the use of nanotechnology as an instrument for increasing the delivery, bioavailability and efficacy of nutrients and drugs.

Many graduates of the Clinical Laboratory Sciences options are employed in Research and Development jobs in biomedical device, biotechnological and pharmaceutical companies such as NOVA Biomedical, Wyeth, and Bristol-Myers, Squibb Pharmaceuticals (formerly Dupont Pharmaceuticals). Other graduates are employed as research associates in the Boston area medical research facilities.
