The social history of the modern Middle East, with a focus on 19th and 20th century Egypt. Especially interested in death studies, cities, foreign and minority communities, and questions of public and private space.

Biosketch

Shane studies the impact of death (e.g. cemeteries, post mortems, funerals) on constructions of foreignness and of public space, with a focus on Alexandria, Egypt, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
