Mechanical Engineering

In the Community

Mechanical engineering faculty and students are actively involved with many external organizations that range from Fortune 500 companies to the neediest segments of society.

Service Learning

For many years, the ME Department has been active in the field of service-learning and, as part of the PerUML Project, we have sent two interdisciplinary teams a year to the Peruvian Andes, bringing electricity and clean water to remote villages.

Picture2Prof. John Duffy, is principal investigator on the Service-Learning Integrated throughout a College of Engineering project (SLICE). SLICE is a major curriculum development initiative, funded by the National Science Foundation. The projects seeks to incorporate service-learning throughout the college of engineering curriculum.

Mechanical engineering students are increasingly collaborating with their peers in the Electrical and Computer Enginering Department as part of the Assistive Technology Program. On January 23, 2006 the Boston Herald ran a story highlighting the work of two UMass Lowell engineering students, Mike Brigandi (ECE) and John Wiley (ME) whose capstone project involved the re-design of a tricycle to assist Jonathan DiCiaccio. Jonathan suffers from arthrogryposis, a disease that causes joints to contract. A surgically implanted steel rod prevents him from bending past a 45 degree angle – making it nearly impossible for him to sit in a wheelchair. See our March 1, 2006 Newsletter for details.

U.S. First Robotics Competition

ME students recently teamed with Whitinsville Christian School in the U.S. First Robotics competition. See our March 20, 2006 Newsletter for details.

ME Advisory Board

The Mechanical Engineering Advisory Board (MEAB) is composed of engineering professionals who help the department keep abreast of the latest developments occurring in the industries that employ mechanical engineeri.

COOP Program

The Coop Program is another asset that provides students with appropriate work experience and exposure to a corporate environment.
