Bachelor of Science
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) offers two undergraduate degrees: a B.S. Eng. in Electrical Engineering and a B.S. Eng. in Computer Engineering. The ECE Department also offers opportunities for double majors with computer science (CS) and physics.
All undergraduate students are assigned faculty advisors and students are required to meet with their advisors, especially during registration periods or whenever there is some matter of concern. Students should consult with their advisor on the best path through each track. This is especially true for coop and part-time students, since the need to adhere to prerequisite course requirements is very important.
The ECE Department has five technology focus areas:
- Computer Engineering
- Electrical Power and Energy Engineering
- Electromagnetic and Electromagnetic Properties of Materials
- Micro- and Optoelectronic Materials, Circuits and Systems
- Telecommunications and Information Engineering
The undergraduate program responds to industry ties by offering a focused curriculum to train a technically-literate engineer of immediate value to the Massachusetts community. Graduates will achieve the following:
- Be knowledgeable and practical problem solvers and competent "hands-on" engineers.
- Have a balanced view of hardware, software and application trade-offs, and possess the basic modeling techniques needed to be effective engineers.
- Have completed studies in the humanities and social sciences to broaden their outlook and will be able to focus their attention on the importance of non-technical knowledge in determining their ultimate level of success in their professional life and their appreciation of the complexities of the real world.
- Possess a "can-do" attitude and have excellent communication skills and the initiative required to engage in lifelong learning.
Program Outcomes and Assessment
Students will have the ability to:
- Formulate and solve engineering problems both theoretically and numerically.
- Test equipment and trouble-shoot in the laboratory.
- Design a reliable system or device from initial specifications to a deliverable system.
- Describe a technical project clearly and coherently in writing or orally.
- Appreciate the complexities of real world environments including: taking responsibility for oneself, working with others, and being mindful of ethical, economic and contemporary concerns.
- Demonstrate competence in taking the initiative for one’s own professional development.
General Education Requirements
Students are required to take three social science and two art and humanities courses.
