Lowell Sun Chronicles UMass Lowell’s Transformation

In recognition of UMass Lowell’s advances in enrollment, diversity, global partnerships and capital improvements over the past five years, the Lowell Sun has published a special section devoted to the University and its amazing achievements.
Some of the changes featured in the supplement include:
- Two new academic buildings are under construction, as well as two state-of-the-art residence halls.
- A new building for the Manning School of Business, to be named the Pulichino Tong Business Building, is slated to begin construction in summer 2013.
- The new Emerging Technologies and Innovation Center, a research center for sciences, engineering and life sciences, is opening October 2012.
- SAT scores are up 44 points among incoming freshman, while the average score for this year’s freshman class up 13 points alone.
- The number of applications over five years has jumped from 3,439 to nearly 10,000.
- UMass Lowell has acquired a number of high-profile properties throughout the city. In July 2009, UMass Lowell bought the former DoubleTree Hotel and changed the name to the UMass Lowell Inn & Conference Center. Six months later, UMass Lowell bought the former Tsongas Arena from the city (for $1) and changed the name to the Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell. The University also acquired the former St. Joesph’s Hospital complex. The complex will become “University Crossing” and will feature a food court, bookstore and space for student activities and clubs. It will bridge the North Campus and downtown.
- The University is now ranked a top-tier national university by the U.S. news and World Report.
