Research at UMass Lowell

  • US News & World Report ranks UMass Lowell among the top 200 research universities in the U.S.
  • The National Science Foundation ranks our Physics Dept. 59th in the U.S. 
  • Our researchers have projects funded by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Occupational Health and Safety.
  • In 2012, researchers brought in more than $60 million in research funds. 
  • The University of Massachusetts ranks 13th in the U.S. for intellectual property generated. 
  • The new Mark and Elisia Saab Emerging Technologies and Innovation Center will support research on applications of nanotechnology.
  • Our researchers developed biodegradable nanospheres that allow drugs to be absorbed directly through the skin.

Athletics at UMass Lowell

Whether you want to hit the field or cheer from the sidelines, UMass Lowell has it all when it comes to sports. UMass Lowell announced on February 14, 2013 that it would be moving to Division I in all sports and joining the America East Conference. The River Hawks began competing in 14 sports in Division I in the 2013-14 academic year, but will not be eligible for postseason play while it completes the four-year NCAA reclassification from Division II to Division I. The River Hawks will be full Division I members of America East in 2017-18.

Here are just a few highlights from our exciting intramural program:
  • Our NCAA Division I hockey team will continue to play in the Hockey East Association competing with national powerhouse programs like Boston College, Boston University and University of New Hampshire
  • The River Hawks have won 15 NCAA Championships in school history
  • Our men's cross country team has been the NCAA East Regional Champion 9 of the last 11 years
  • Most recently, our field hockey team won their second NCAA DII National Championship
Since 2000, the River Hawks have:
  • made 104 NCAA post-season appearances, 
  • won two team national championships, 
  • had two individual national championships,
  • had a pair of national players of the year and one Olympian, 
  • won 59 conference championships, 
  • had 214 All-Americans and 32 Academic All-Americans.
