How to Apply - FAFSA Instructions
The University requires students to file a
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Recommended that students and parents  request a Federal Student Aid PINs before the student applies for aid. The PIN can be used to electronically sign the FAFSA, electronically sign certain loan contracts, and access online information about federal student aid the student has received. To request a PIN, go to Federal Student Aid PIN.

Verification Selection Process

Verification is a process to confirm the information you provided on FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The U.S. Department of Education selects some students for the verification process. Also, the Financial Aid Office may select students if we feel there is a need to verify data or if there is conflicting information.

If you are selected for the verification process, you will be asked to complete specific verification forms. Please carefully review the Missing Information Letter/Email you receive from the Financial Aid Office and/or review your iSiS Self Service “To Do” list. Please send in ONLY documents that the Financial Aid Office has requested. Requested forms can be downloaded from our Financial Aid forms page.

If you are selected for Verification and your IRS income tax data is requested, you have two ways of obtaining that data

I.  IRS Data Retrieval Option:

This is the fasted and easiest option to obtain your IRS income tax data. According to the IRS, electronically filed tax return information will be available for retrieval 2 weeks after the electronic return has been filed. Data from paper tax returns will be available for retrieval in 6-8 weeks after they receive the paper tax return. Instructions for IRS Data Retrieval on your FAFSA.

II. IRS Tax Return Transcript Option:

If you were not able to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool or you changed the data that was transferred, we will need an IRS tax return transcript. Per federal regulations we can no longer accept a personal copy of your tax return unless you filed a Puerto Rican or foreign tax return. It is important that you request a Tax RETURN Transcript and not a Tax Account Transcript. This link provides step by step instructions for requesting your Tax Return Transcript  from the IRS

UMass Lowell strongly encourages you to make copies of the IRS transcript before submitting it to us.

Always ensure documents you submit to the Financial Aid Office include your name, social security number, Student UMS ID, and all required signatures.

The cost of attendance (COA) includes direct expenses such as tuition and fees, and also includes indirect such as books, transportation and personal expenses. The expected family contribution (EFC) is determined by the federal needs analysis formula and is calculated by completing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Below you will find the estimated COA for all academic careers.
